Starting programs

To start a program, double-click on the icon for the program. Among the icons, you should see one that represents QuickBooks? , placed there when the program was installed on your computer. Double click on this and you would be off and running in our favorite application. (There are other ways to start programs, but the subject at hand is the desktop.) If you are using QuickBooks? , rather than supporting it, you will not have nine icons for the various versions.

Clicking on an icon won’t work, if you can’t see the icon. If the Program Manger title bar is showing at the top of the screen, look just below it in the menu bar and click on Window then on that certain program group which (you hope) contains the icon for the program you want. If Program Manager is not showing, hold down the Alt key. Tap the Tab key and watch the box. When the name Program Manager is showing, release the Alt key and bring that to the front. This will give access to the Window menu (if needed,) the program group, and the icon. Once you get the hang of it, it is easier done than said.

More information about what is behind an XE "properties:Windows 3.1 icons" icon, can be found by highlighting it (single click.) Then click in the Program Manager menu bar on File and select Properties. A new program icon XE "icon:new, Windows 3.1" can be added by clicking File then New. Leave Program Item checked, and click OK, which will bring up a box nearly identical to this.

Description is the title seen below the icon, and can be changed here, as when an installation program sets up an unnecessarily long name.

Command Line is the path (drive and directory) and complete file name for the program which the icon starts.

Working Directory designates a directory where the program will look for files, if it works. If this does not work, you either use the program’s default directory, or select the directory you need.

Icon button allows selecting an icon different from that shown. After clicking that button, it may be necessary to click the Browse button in the next box.
